Sodium-Ion Battery Performance Is Catching Up With Lithium

Sodium-ion batteries could make inroads into the dominance of lithium-ion this decade, if efforts to improve energy density are successful.
Sodium-ion batteries could make inroads into the dominance of lithium-ion this decade, if efforts to improve energy density are successful. Developers of sodium-ion batteries aim to match the current energy density of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells by 2025.

Right now, the lower energy density of sodium-ion batteries makes them better suited for stationary storage. In transport, higher density LFP batteries are in the lead, with their share of the passenger electric vehicle market rising to 40% in 2022.

But maturing technology and growing production scale will make sodium-ion batteries more desirable for EVs. BloombergNEF expects sodium-ion to break into the two- and three-wheeler segment, which is less sensitive to energy density. If battery makers achieve their ambitious technical targets, they may service a more diverse range of EVs before 2030. High lithium prices are also providing a tailwind, leaving room for alternative technologies such as sodium-ion to meet the insatiable demand for batteries across a range of sectors.
